What are CMS Star Ratings?

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) developed a 5-star rating system to help consumers, their families, and caregivers compare nursing homes more easily. The system gives a rating for health inspections, staffing, quality measures, and an overall rating. This rating system applies to all Medicare Advantage (MA) lines of business: Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). It also applies to Medicare Advantage plans that cover both health services and prescription drugs (MA‐PD).

This program is designed to promote an improvement in the overall quality of life at Medicare/Medicaid facilities and formally recognize primary care providers for demonstrating an increase in performance measures over a defined period of time.
